abstract

This paper will examine Pasolini's relationship to the legacy of neorealist culture and aesthetics in the context of his use of locations in of his 1962 film 'Mamma Roma.' The paper seeks to tease out the political and aesthetic implications of the film's setting in and around one of the major examples of neorealist architecture, Saverio Muratori's INA Casa housing estate, 'Tuscolano II.'

John David Rhodes teaches film studies in the Department of English at the University of York (UK). His writing on Italian film has appeared in 'Film History,' 'Framework' and other places. His book on Pasolini, 'Stupendous, Miserable City: Pasolini, Rome, Cinema' is forthcoming from University of Minnesota Press. He also serves on the editorial advisory board of 'Framework.'
